On Thursday night, we'll have a joint meeting with the Philosophy Stream, in which we'll be talking about some of the biggest Big Ideas of our era: Capitalism, Social Justice, and Globalism.
We'll start with a film, Mardi Gras Made in China and then move on to a discussion that will address Marx and Appiah.
Pizza (globalism's food par excellence) will be served.

It is was great to attend this event while reading Marx and Engles for my sociological theory class. I came across some quotes while reading today earlier today that seemed ordained to be read in the context of that movie,
"The need of a constantly expanding market for its products chases the bourgeoisie over the whole surface of the globe. It must nestle everywhere, settle everywhere, established connections everywhere."
"The bourgeoisie, by the rapid improvement of all instruments of production, by the immensely facilitated means of communication, draws all, even the most barbarian, nations into civilization...It compels all nations, on pain of extinction, to adopt the bourgeois mode of production; it compels them to introduce what it calls civilization into there midst, i.e., to become bourgeois themselves. In one word, it creates a world after its own image."

In class we have been having discussions about how Marx's predicted overthrow of the bourgeois has not yet happened, and for what reasons its hasn't happened. Many sociologist after Marx attempt to modify his theories to make them more applicable to modern times where there isn't the predicted sharp duality between two antagonistic classes. When I read these quotes I thought Marx doesn't need any modification. These quotes show him predicting globalism hundreds of years before its manifestation. The internet being his noted, "immensely facilitated means of communication". The accuracy of this prediction is what struck me as amazing and i felt like sharing it with the blog. If Marx was right about globalism, who's to say that some revolution isn't on the way? Ohhh noo, now i am sounding like a crazy Marxist. Time will tell...
