Here are two pieces on musical language, inspired by a blog post in which music critic Carl Wilson (author of a new book on why he hates Celine Dion when so many people love her and what that tells us about the way musical taste operates) argues that there's a connection between the unofficial Obama campaign ad, "Yes We Can" being played on YouTube and the compositions of Steve Reich.
The first piece looks at the work of Steve Reich and how recording a simple phrase - "It's gonna rain" - led to his invention of musical phasing.
The second piece comes from the fascinating radio show Radiolab.
